Modern day Shropshire

Alice Glaston was born in the village of Little Wenlock, nearby modern day Telford in Shropshire, England. Today, the sites surrounding Alice's case are areas of outstanding natural beauty and deserve a mention, beyond Alice's tragic tale.

Much Wenlock

Much Wenlock it is believed is the site where Alice Glaston was tried in 1546, and possibly taken down the road to the site of whats now known as Gallows Tree Leasowe. The town is the epitome of true Shropshire charm, and is made up of markets, cafe's, a museum and some of the best hospitality our team have had the pleasure to have experienced. But it's modern history is actually very significant.  In 1850, the Wenlock Agricultural Reading Society (WARS), along with local doctor William Penny Brookes established the Olympic Class. Dr Brookes is later to be considered one of the founding fathers of the modern Olympic Games. In tribute to Much Wenlock's connection to the establishment of the modern Olympic Games, one of the London 2012 mascots was named after the town.
